What do you a situation where a countries law enforcement fail to detect 5000 jihadis moving to take over a major communications artery, surrender at sight of millitants approaching their convoy, allow a convoy taking arms and ammunitions to be taken by said millitants, allow a group of people - who threaten suicide bombings against the country - to propagate their ideology within sight of the countries premier intelligence agency. We can only refer to this as a failure of the government to act. Most countries have an army to protect its borders the Pakistan Army unfortunately is good for little other than to conquer its own people on a regular basis. I would highly recomend Military inc by Ayesha Sidiqa for a start towards understanding the problem.

Hameed I am confused by your comment - I didn't understand the last bit about the UK's democracy. In the UK citizens are given the freedom to criticise and challenge their government - the administration that is chosen through a democratic process; through elections - through free-will. I am not saying that democracy works everywhere and in some nations democracy may not be the right answer for liberty and human rights, but in the case of Pakistan I have seen a history of military rule as well as civilian governments which were apparently "democractically elected" but none of them were truly representative of the people. It is time for a real step change in Pakistani politics, time for the people to stand up for what they believe in and against people like Musharraf AND the minority elite who run the country.

M.Ziauddin questioned Musharraf on an issue in the UK which was relevant to the British people - it was about Rashid Rauf a British citizen - the question asked was one of the most relevant ones asked. I am not sure if you have heard the Q&A but I urge you to listen to it: www.rusi.org, all will become clear. Ziauddin was well within his rights as a journalist (with the changing nature of media now, journalists are in a position to object and challenge - will the common folk ever get the chance? I think not) Musharraf has full opportunity to clear the mix-up and set the record straight, but instead he plunged into a discussion about patriotism and loyalty which was totally beyond the point. THIS is the problem with Pakistanis (I am generalising here) - they are so obsessed with patriotism and nationalism that they are happy to see their country being sold to America (foreign aid post 9/11) and sing "dil dil pakistan" on 14 August but they will not stand up for their country.

It is a shame really!

Another article which I found very interesting was this: http://rememberjenkinsear.blogspot.com/2008/01/overview-of-pakistans-development.html

Mush is far from being a partiout. What do you call a man who gets his fellow ctizens bombed and shot without any trial. One who stands dby and watches the gangs plunder the city and raid people's houses to loot the house and rape girls. I find no logic in calling such a man a human being, let alone a patriot. For those who support mush i ask you this: Is a man who sells his nation in fear of an attack from a superior force a partiot or a coward? If he is a partiot and a great person (like some think), what will you call people like William Wallace (Braveheart), or the companions of Muhammed (peace be upon him) who stood up against forces greater in numbers and better equipped? Take your pick. Common sense says the one who stands for what is right is brave and the other is a coward. I for one believe that mush would have been a patriot if he had refused to join america's war on terror (read war on non-seculars) and had said that pakistanis are ready to protect themselves from any foreign threat.

As Wallace said: They may take our lives, but they will never take our freedom. Sadly our freedom was taken days after 9/11 and our (muslims) lives are being taken too.

I am not very much fond of Musharraf and his policies BUT as a Pakistani I believe Musharraf's remarks for Mr. Ziauddin stands right. Escape incident of criminals happens everywhere... but no real patriot would mortify his/her own country by casting such incidents as complete failure of intelligence and low enforcement agencies. I guess we are losing the sense of nationalism…

A true patriot is the one who stands up for his countrymen with courage in the face of injustice and corruption - not a tyrannical autocrat who dismisses anyone for speaking up against his undemocratic regime. Pakistan is for the people, not for a selected few such as the elite / military personnel.
